Announcement – Expert Discussion on Judicial governance in transitional democracies

We would like to invite you to the Expert Discussion on Judicial governance in transitional democracies. The event will be held online on November 5, 2021, at 15.00-16.30 CET, via Zoom platform.

Registration for online participation is now open under the link.

Transitional democracies, like Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, are still struggling to establish independent and well-governed judiciaries. Unfortunately, the best European standards and practices are misused by corrupt judicial elites and other groups of interests as a shield against any reasonable attempts aimed at ensuring the integrity and accountability of the judiciary.

In order to address this problem experts from Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine united their efforts and prepared Recommendations towards ensuring accountable and independent judicial governance in transitional democracies (link). This document was presented during the international Democracy In Action: Zero Corruption Conference that took place in June 2021 in Kyiv, and was highly assessed by the Honorary President of the Venice Commission Mrs Hanna Suchocka and other panellists.

The aim of the event is to bring together experts, judges, and representatives of European institutions to discuss how to ensure independent and accountable judicial governance in transitional democracies.

Among the distinguished speakers invited to speak at the conference are the Honorary President of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe Ms Hanna Suchocka, Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia and a member of the Consultative Council of European Judges Ms Nino Bakakuri, member of Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic Mr Pavol Zilincik and the Head of the Judicial Studies Institute (JUSTIN) Mr David Kosar. The discussion will be moderated by ANTAC expert Halyna Chyzhyk

This event is conducted with the support of the European Union and the International Renaissance Foundation within the framework «EU4USociety» initiative.
